You've likely received mail from others in my line of work making less-than-honest claims. Why? They hope your lack of knowledge will help line their pockets. I've been receiving these myself. Each time another shows up in my box I feel more obligated to tell you the truth. I'm sure you don't appreciate being played any more than I do.
So, let's have a look at some examples of these claims ...
Card says: “2021 Benefits Information for Georgia Citizens Only”
Truth is: By benefits they're referring to life insurance coverage. The cards were mailed to residents of Georgia and life insurance is always state specific.
Card says: “You may qualify for a state-regulated program to pay for your final expenses
Truth is: ALL life insurance is state-regulated and by “program” they mean “policy!”
Card says: “... regardless of your medical condition, even if you've been turned down before.”
Truth is: This is NOT some special senior benefit the state is funding for certain qualifying people. This is life insurance. You will have to pay for it with premiums. There are lots of insurance programs (policies) available with different health requirements (including policies with no health questions asked and no medical exams). This means EVERYONE may be eligible.
Card says: “It is important to know how to qualify for this benefit available to you.”
Truth is: In order to receive life insurance coverage there are (and always have been) certain qualifications that must be met. These qualifications vary from policy to policy and company to company. The only way to know what you qualify for is to speak with an agent.
Card says: “This benefit will pay for 100% of all funeral expenses
Truth is: ALL life insurance will pay for 100% of your funeral expenses if you have a policy large enough to cover those costs.
Card says: “This payment is tax-free for Georgia residents.”
Truth is: ALL life insurance payouts are tax-free! The IRS provides certain tax shelters under which life insurance claims are protected (regardless of what state you live in).
Card says: “You are entitled to receive no-cost information as a resident of Georgia (or your state of residence).”
Truth is: ANY insurance agent would LOVE to sit down with you and give you no-cost information!
Card says: “Return this postage-paid card within 5 days (some say to receive a free Walmart gift card and some say to receive information about how to qualify).”
Truth is: I returned one of these and never received a gift card or even a call back. If you do receive a call back it will be a call from an insurance agent hoping to make a sales appointment with you. You might get that Walmart card if you schedule an appointment with the salesperson.
I hope the information I've provided will clarify any questions you might have in handling these pieces of mail from now on.
